Well, I am a "purist" photographer and an artist and understand your point: artists do it, why can't photographers. The goal is to make something unique, something your own. Yet, I would feel more comfortable if (as you mention) alll the photos are yours and you label the final composition a photo illustration --or perhaps there is a better term? In the end, such a work is your "painting."
