I'm a writer, photographer and artist...and had a somewhat similar experience. Perfect eyesight, until one day--during a flight home --I noticed that my vision was blurred in my right eye. Bottom line: undiagnosed glaucoma. Rather quickly I lost vision in that eye--just a blur. A great glaucoma specialist saved most of the vision in my left eye. I can't drive, can't judge distance, and see in two dimensions with some loss of the world around the edges (not in the center as in your case). It has not progressed. My glaucoma doctor tells me that I will be dead before I go totally blind--that pleased me! I I think that my photos and paintings have actually improved: I see things differently! Glad to read that you, too, have found ways to adapt and conquer!
