A Farewell to Medium
It’s time to end the break
I re-read today one of my very first posts on Medium. It was in June of 2016, and it’s title, Is It Too Late?, told it all…then.
I’ve written a lot of stories since, taken a lot of photos, painted a lot of paintings, planted a lot of flowers. I’m pleased with all that. I published books. Although very few people have read them, they made me feel like a writer.
I am a very fortunate man. I married the first woman I truly loved and we still love each other. I succeeded in two major professions that gave me pleasure and helped provide for my family and myself in comfort. I helped guide our two children into happy and successful lives of their own. I have seen as much of the world as I ever wanted. I live in and own a beautiful place on a tropical island. I have no reason to complain.
Sure, I don’t look like that skinny, big-eared teenager in that pre-historic photo above, but I’m not ashamed of the fit body under my wizened face. Until recently, I still thought it was not too late.
Reaching 81 in good physical health has been a lucky accident, but not a happy one. It is no fun to be a survivor. My two younger brothers are gone. My older sister, gone too. My oldest sister is frail. All my…
